The Municipality of Kostenets is located at the foothills of the Rila Mountains, just about 50 minutes from Sofia. The area impresses visitors with its beautiful nature and iconic natural landmarks, among which the Kostenets Waterfall stands out.
The municipality is renowned for its hot mineral springs with proven healing properties, located in the town of Momin Prokhod, the resort area of Vili Kostenets, and the resort area of Pchelinski bani (Pchelin springs). The mineral water is among the most valuable natural resources of the region and attracts visitors for balneological and spa tourism.
The most significant historical site is Trayanovi vrata (Trajan’s Gate Fortress), a symbol of Bulgaria’s national historical heritage. It was here in 986 AD that one of the greatest defeats of the Byzantine Emperor Basil II took place. The fortress is located 15 km from the town of Kostenets, in close proximity to the Trakia Motorway, and is unique for its architecture and historical value.
The region preserves living traditions and crafts such as knife-making, decorating Easter eggs, and Kukeri rituals. Particularly attractive are the Kukeri dances, which every year, 40 days before Easter, bring together participants from all over Bulgaria. This year, the Kukeri Festival “Kostenets 2026” will take place on February 22, starting at 10:30 a.m., at the Benkovski Sports Complex in the town of Kostenets.
