The “Sport and Tourism” Department of Svilengrad Municipality has been striving for years to preserve, develop, and promote the sites of historical and cultural heritage located within its territory.
This, in particular, takes place in the villages of Mezek and Matochina, where good infrastructure has already been established to provide access to the sites desired by tourists.
In the village, we focus on one of the best-preserved fortresses: a medieval Byzantine fortress from the late 11th century and a Thracian domed tomb from the 4th–3rd century BC.
The village also features a new interactive center with a cinema hall and a border guard room, where visitors can learn more about the local tourist sites, as well as what life was like on the border and at its outposts.
Currently, an ongoing project is underway to open a fourth site and restore an old outpost from the past.
In addition to cultural tourism, Mezek is also developing mountain and sports tourism, with the creation of an eco trail to Mount Sheynovets—a historic and important site where the Balkan War began.
Every year, the Mezek Run marathon takes place. This year, it will be held in partnership with neighboring Greece to mark and celebrate our entry into the Schengen Area and the free movement of people without borders.
In recent years, we have also worked hard to develop ecotourism in the village of Mezek, in cooperation with the community center, by creating a rich annual cultural calendar to preserve Bulgarian traditions and customs.
